Process
The capillary has a high concentration of carbon dioxide resulting in it transferring to the alveoli where there is a lower concentration.
The alveoli, now having a high concentration causes the oxygen to diffuse into the capillaries into red blood cells.

Properties of alveoli

| One cell thick walls | Distance for gases to diffuse is short. |
| Moist walls | Allows gases to dissolve faster resulting in overall easier exchange. |
